Helen M. Alvare

Now associate professor of law at George Mason University, Helen Alvaré was an associate professor of law at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law from 2000 to 2008. She received her B.S. in economics summa cum laude from Villanova University in 1981, where she also received the Adam Smith Prize in economics. In 1984, she received her law degree at Cornell University and, in 1989, a master’s degree in systematic theology from The Catholic University of America.

Alvaré practiced with the Philadelphia law firm of Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young, specializing in commercial litigation and matters relating to the free exercise of religion. For three years, she worked at the Office of General Counsel for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, where she drafted amicus briefs in leading U.S. Supreme Court cases concerning abortion, euthanasia, and the Establishment Clause. She worked with the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities at the NCCB from 1990 to 2000. In that position, she lobbied, testified before federal congressional committees, addressed university audiences, and appeared on hundreds of television and radio programs on behalf of the U.S. Catholic bishops. Alvaré also assisted the Holy See on matters concerning women, marriage, and the family, and respect for human life.

She was chair of the commission investigating clerical abuse in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and is an adviser to Pope Benedict XVI’s Pontifical Council for the Laity, as well as an ABC News consultant. A well-respected speaker, she has lectured on abortion, euthanasia, and feminism on behalf of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops at more than 70 colleges, universities, and law schools. Her legal scholarship regularly treats current controversies about marriage, parenting, and the new reproductive technologies.
