Catholic University to Celebrate Cardinal Virtue of Prudence in February

Catholic University will host events related to the cardinal virtue of prudence in February as part of a campaign on campus to accentuate the four cardinal virtues.

The campaign is directly related to the inaugural theme chosen by Catholic University’s new President, John Garvey. “Intellect and Virtue: the Idea of a Catholic University” serves as the focus of a semester-long series of lectures and other events.

The virtues campaign will focus most heavily, though not exclusively, on CUA’s student body. Three university events and CUA’s iPromise campaign will be tied to the virtue of prudence.

On Feb. 12, the Knights of Columbus will host a conference titled “Virtuous Living: Leading Self and Others,” which will begin at 9 a.m. in Caldwell Hall Auditorium. Garvey and other local leaders will lead discussions on living life as a leader in Christ’s footsteps. This conference features speakers, breakout sessions, and workshops. It concludes with confessions, adoration, and Mass.

On Feb. 14, the university will launch its annual iPromise campaign, which urges students to look after one another during spring break. The campaign will run through March 5. Students can sign the pledge at http://ipromise.cua.edu/.

On Feb. 17, Rev. James Martin, S.J., editor of American magazine, will speak at 7 p.m. in Caldwell Hall Auditorium on “Joy in the Spiritual Life” as part of the CUA on Tap series. Father Martin is a Jesuit priest and author of many books, including My Life with the Saints and The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything.

On Feb. 22, William Mattison, assistant professor of moral theology in CUA’s School of Theology and Religious Studies, will speak on “The Cardinal Virtues and the Good Life” at 6 p.m. in Room 323 of the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center. The lecture is also part of the Dialogue on Demand lecture series.

The cardinal virtue of temperance will be celebrated in March and the virtue of fortitude in April.
