Catholic University to Inaugurate Cardinal Virtues Theme in January

Beginning in January, Catholic University will begin a four-month long campaign on campus to accentuate the four cardinal virtues. The month of January will be dedicated to the cardinal virtue of Justice.

The campaign is directly related to the inaugural theme chose by Catholic University’s new President, John Garvey. “Intellect and Virtue: the Idea of a Catholic University” is the theme that Garvey has chosen for his speech on the occasion of his inauguration as Catholic University’s 15th President on Jan. 25; it is also the theme for a semester-long series of lectures and other events.

The Virtue component of the programming will focus most heavily, though not exclusively on CUA’s student body. Two major university events in January will be tied to the virtue of Justice.

On Jan. 17, members of the university community will spend a day doing community service as part of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Volunteers will clean, paint murals and help beautify local schools in Washington, D.C., through the organization City Year. Other volunteers will spend the day at the Washington Hebrew Congregation preparing food, sorting donated clothing and making arts and crafts with children. This is the sixth year that students will spend the holiday held in honor of the civil rights leader’s birthday completing service projects.

On Jan. 24, the day before his inaugural ceremony, John Garvey will join hundreds of CUA students in Caldwell Hall Auditorium at 10:15 a.m. before they leave campus to participate in the 38th Annual March for Life. In addition to the more than 500 students expected to participate in the march in downtown Washington, D.C., more than 200 students will also volunteer to make it possible for about 1,300 teens to spend the night in the Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center on the eve of the march. CUA has offered these arrangements for visiting groups for more than a dozen years.

The other cardinal virtues of prudence, temperance and fortitude will be celebrated between February and April.
